What is an SMS gateway? How it works, sender rules and prices

An SMS gateway is the service or software that connects an application to mobile carrier networks so it can send and receive text messages. Your code hands the gateway a message over an HTTP API or SMPP; the gateway routes it to the recipient's carrier and reports back whether it was delivered.

Apps texting people send A2P (application-to-person) traffic, people texting each other P2P. Twilio's A2P overview says US carriers treat every message sent through a provider as A2P; CTIA's May 2023 guidelines call the classes Non-Consumer and Consumer.

How an SMS gateway delivers a message

1. Your app submits the message by HTTPS request or SMPP submit_sm; the returned ID means accepted, not delivered.
2. The gateway routes it to the recipient's carrier, over a direct connection or through a connection aggregator, which CTIA describes as linking businesses to several carriers. smpp.org names aggregators and mobile operators as gateway providers.
3. The carrier delivers it and returns a delivery receipt (DLR).
4. The gateway posts a status webhook. Telnyx sends message.sent, then message.finalized with delivered, delivery_failed or delivery_unconfirmed (docs); Twilio's delivered and undelivered callbacks usually carry the receipt's date as RawDlrDoneDate.

"Delivered" is the carrier's confirmation; Twilio reports read only for RCS and WhatsApp.

HTTP API or SMPP

An HTTP API takes one HTTPS request per message and reports status by webhook. SMPP (Short Message Peer-to-Peer), the open protocol linking applications, gateways and carrier message centers, keeps a TCP session (a "bind") open for binary packets, receipts included (smpp.org); versions 3.3 (1997), 3.4 (1999) and 5.0 (2003) are in use.

Vonage uses SMPP itself to reach carriers but says most developers can safely ignore it. In SMS-rating order, SMPP access comes from Sinch through sales, Infobip in version 3.4 only, and Vonage after a volume forecast and without global high availability.

What an SMS gateway costs

Gateways bill per segment: 160 GSM-7 characters, 153 per part once a message splits. One emoji or curly quote switches it to UCS-2: 70 characters, 67 per part (Twilio). GSM-7 has é and ñ but not á, ã or ç, so Portuguese and Spanish texts often cost double.

Telnyx lists $0.004 per segment in the US, $0.054 to Brazil and $0.091 to Mexico. US carriers add $0.0035 to $0.005 per long-code segment (Twilio's list), and Telnyx, Bird, Vonage, Infobip, Twilio and Plivo list 10DLC brand registration from $4.50 and campaign vetting at $15. No provider here lists Brazil or Mexico carrier fees; Twilio says they may apply.

Phone-as-gateway apps and GSM modems

The open-source SMSGate app puts a REST API on an Android phone and sends from its SIM; a GSM or LTE modem does the same for a server through the AT commands of 3GPP TS 27.005, for example under Kannel (last stable release 1.4.5, June 2018).

• Android's source code lets a non-default SMS app send 30 messages a minute by default, then asks the phone's user for permission. Google Play grants SMS permissions mainly to default SMS apps; SMSGate isn't on Google Play.
• The sender is the SIM's number; SMSGate's FAQ says a brand name must come from the carrier, and suggests random delays and SIM rotation against operator restrictions.
• Kannel's user guide warns that modem delivery reports "may not work".
• CTIA counts any business message as Non-Consumer traffic and puts typical consumer volume at up to 1,000 messages a day.
